Video Encoding with Open Source tools

Posted on: October 10, 2007

The current versions of ffmpeg can encode to FLV. I have used it successfully on Windows and on Ubuntu Linux.

FLV metadata can be injected using flvtool2.

To convert a movie file (.mp4 .mov .mpg .3gp .mpeg .wmv .avi) to FLV, do following:

  1. ffmpeg -i movie.[avi] -s 320×240 -ar 44100 -r 12 movie.flv
  2. cat movie.flv | flvtool2 -U stdin movie.flv
